During their engagement session, Natasha gave Shaw

During their engagement session, Natasha gave Shawn a very special pre-wedding gift and wrote him a beautiful note (on the most hilarious card I’ve ever seen). I loved being able to spend time with these two and get to know them more before the wedding, even though it felt like we had known each other forever!

I remember having the most brutal fire smoke roll in immediately after their session and feeling so grateful we had planned it for when we did! It was a cool, cloudy evening and we had the St. Albert Botanic Park all to ourselves! Wandering around and exploring the garden with these two was the perfect lead in to their Garden party of a wedding later that summer (coming soon!!)

I don’t even know where to begin talking about h

I don’t even know where to begin talking about how much this past weekend at the Illuminate workshop meant to me. I feel like I’ve been stuck in a state of limbo recently. Not sure what to do or where to go, so then I end up paralyzed and doing nothing haha. But this weekend felt like such a big physical and emotion reset for me that I desperately needed.

@sofia_katherine, thank you from the bottom of my heart for putting this together. I am so grateful for you. Words cannot express how proud I am of you for stepping into this teacher role and doing it so well - so genuinely, so enthusiastically, so free of judgement, and so ready to support anyone and everyone. When I say this is the best workshop I’ve ever been to, I mean it with my whole heart. I can’t wait to put into practice things I learned this weekend, and I can’t wait to attend another Illuminate workshop!

@saprasil @mandarineclarke @jess.blackstock - thank you so much for your hard work feeding us all this weekend. Eating out and travelling with severe allergies can be really hard, let alone doing it in a place that’s like 40+ minutes from the nearest hospital and no cell service haha. You have no idea how much a completely nut and fish free menu for the entire weekend meant, let alone a menu as detailed and delicious as the one you created for us, and your hard work does not go unnoticed. Everything was INCREDIBLE.

To all of the vendors and models, thank you for putting in so much work and long hours to make this happen for us. You are awe inspiring. WE APPRECIATE YOU!

To all of the other attendees, thank you so much for showing up. Meeting new people and seeing everyone’s work is really just so inspiring.

For the most part, I really prefer working with natural light. Nothing beats the unicorn light of golden hour, and over the years I’ve even become more adept at using harsh midday light to my advantage.

When I was in school, I struggled a lot with learning flash. It was taught to us in a very traditional, Sears-portrait-studio way, and while I appreciate learning the basics in that way, it took literally years of trial and error by myself after that to find a way of incorporating artificial light in a way that felt natural to me. A way to use it without it feeling stiff, clunky or obvious. All of the images in the carousel are done with artificial light in a variety of ways - a video light or flash, bounced off something, softened with a modifier, or even directly lit. I’ve become more and more confident, but always felt like there’s more I could learn.

A few years ago I told the incredibly talented @sofia_katherine that she needed to host a flash workshop and when she does, I’d be there - so I’m very excited to be heading to the very first Illuminate Workshop this weekend, with the purpose of expanding my artificial lighting education, shooting outdoors at night in the mountains, adding new tools to my toolkit for weddings, and having an amazing retreat weekend with fellow creatives! I’ll be completely out of service until I return on Monday afternoon, so I’ll be checking all emails when I return. Have a wonderful weekend! ✨🌙

Had to get these Palm Springs shots off my hard drive and on to my website finally… enjoy the little post on my blog today! I really liked how this session pushed me to shoot in really different lighting conditions and it even inspired me to edit a little differently than normal.
