Vintage Boudoir with Marina Georgia

This shoot came together as a collaboration with Marina Georgia, a makeup artist from Vancouver, British Columbia, and was built around a shared love for the vintage, 1950s inspired aesthetic.

Vintage-inspired boudoir: a soft, timeless take on pin-up

There’s something undeniably romantic about vintage-inspired boudoir images. It captures the quiet ritual of a woman getting ready for a night out, the soft brush of silk against skin, and the glow of light bouncing off an old mirror.

This session was inspired by more classic pin-up and vintage fashion, but styled in a way that feels more modern. Marina’s inspiration was to capture the quiet, in-between stages of getting ready — from the intimate application of lipstick and blush, to leisurely taking out hand-rolled pin curls and letting the hair flow freely. We focused on soft natural light, high contrast black and whites, with a subtle old-fashioned grain. From this, we wanted to progress the session into a more modern boudoir session in a style that feels soft, unhurried, and focused on feminine expression.

I adored the contrast between so many textures during this session. Structured pin curls to soft, bouncy waves. Buttery silk to soft wool. Metallic details of the vintage brushes to the fluttery lace of the fan.

Styling details that bring it to life

Every element that Marina chose to bring with her or include in her hair and makeup supported the aesthetic theme:

  • Soft silk camisole and matching robe, focusing on delicate and feminine textures

  • Hair set in pin curls, showing the middle of the process rather than being fully styled

  • Soft glam makeup, focusing on accentuating her gorgeous blue eyes, luminous skin and a soft feminine pink for the cheeks and lips

  • Heirloom-inspired details such as a beautiful floral fan, and a vintage brush and hand mirror set that would look right at home on an old fashioned vanity

Often, when people think of bringing props to their session, they immediately imagine the cheesy boudoir sessions of the early aughts. But when your props are chosen intentionally to support the story you’re trying to tell and create a more specific theme, they don’t feel like just ‘props’. They give you something to do with your hands and settle into the moment without overthinking. And let’s be honest: “what should I do with my hands?” is a question I get at almost every single session!

From vintage boudoir to something More modern

As the session unfolded, it began to shift from the vintage vibes we started with into something more modern. Marina wanted photos that were fun and unique, full of all the things she’s inspired by, but also some that felt like a more current version of her. The structure of the pin curls gave way to loose movement, the styling simplified, all while preserving the softness and femininity we began with. It became less like she was stepping into a character, and more like settling into herself.
